Freshman Sarah Sigman doesn’t mess around when it comes to decals. Like many Batesies’ water bottles and computers, Sigman’s backpack is meaningfully decorated. Every addition has a story—a personal anecdote. She took the time to explain a few of her stylistic choices:
“I like self-expression and think it’s super important. Being secure in who you are facilitates self-identification. My backpack is a physical manifestation of my identity. These items show my interests.”
“This one is my favorite. It’s ‘Rosie the Riveter’ but with a book instead of a fist. I like to think that education is power. Power isn’t power. You could call me a dove, I guess.”
“I just thought this one was so cute. I also have mad asthma.”
“This one’s taken from one of my favorite artists: Keith Haring.”
“I’m just a teen girl with a lot of feelings and I want everyone to know. I also used to get a pair of red high-top converse every year for my birthday, so this patch is perfect. The only downside is it’s a peel-and-stick – I sewed it on anyway.”
“I saw a pin online with a band-aid on it, but it was $11. I said ‘that’s bullshit, I have band-aids.’”
